If you have spent years chasing hormone fixes and nothing has stuck, there is usually a reason it could not. Not a character flaw, not a lack of effort, and not "you are just getting older." Often it is that something underneath your hormones has been putting active pressure on them the entire time, and no one thought to look for it.

One of the variables most workups never check is mycotoxins. This post is about what they are, how they quietly interfere with the exact systems you have been trying to support, and why naming them can finally explain a stall that has never made sense.

The reframe is this: your hormones were probably never the thing that was broken.

Picture them as messages traveling down a pathway to the cells that are supposed to receive them. When you take progesterone, support your adrenals, or optimize your thyroid medication, you are putting better messages onto that pathway. That is reasonable, and it often helps.

But if something is sitting on the pathway itself, blocking it, then better messages do not get through any better than the old ones did. You can keep improving the signal and keep coming up short, because the problem was never the signal. It was the blockage underneath it.

Why do your hormone labs read normal while you still feel terrible?

Before we get to the mechanism, it helps to understand why this hides so well.

A mycotoxin is a compound produced by certain molds that grow in water-damaged buildings. Mycotoxins are not measured on a standard hormone panel, and they are not measured on most comprehensive ones either. So your estrogen, your progesterone, your TSH, and your cortisol can all come back inside their reference ranges while a pressure no one tested for is quietly working against them.

That is the maddening gap so many women describe. Normal labs, while feeling anything but. The labs are not lying. They are just answering a narrower question than the one your body is asking.

One more assumption to let go of: mold is not only a humid-climate, visibly-moldy-bathroom problem. It grows anywhere with minor water damage, a slow leak under a sink, a window that sweats, a roof that wept once, an air conditioning unit that stays a little too damp. The home can look spotless and smell completely fine. This is one reason the connection gets missed for years.

How do mycotoxins disrupt your hormones?

When the body carries a meaningful mycotoxin load, it interferes with the endocrine system, the network of glands that produce your hormones, at the cellular level rather than at the level of any single gland. That cellular reach is what lets one root cause touch so many systems at once.

There are three plain-language pathways for how this happens.

First, mycotoxins directly interfere with the glands that make hormones, so the signal leaving the gland is already off before any therapy enters the picture. Second, they damage mitochondria, the part of each cell that produces energy. Making steroid hormones is energy-expensive work, so when cellular energy drops, the raw capacity to produce hormones drops across the board. Third, they trigger systemic inflammation that scrambles the feedback loops your body uses to keep hormones in range, so the thermostat itself stops reading the room accurately.

Your thyroid. Your thyroid makes T4, the storage form of thyroid hormone, which your body has to convert into T3, the active form your cells actually run on. Your adrenals and stress response. The HPA axis is the communication loop between your brain and your adrenal glands that governs your stress hormones, chiefly cortisol. Under mycotoxin pressure, cortisol patterns tend to dysregulate into the state so many women describe in the same words: wired but tired, exhausted all day and then wide awake at 2am for no reason. It reads like burnout, and it is real, but the usual advice to simply rest harder does not resolve it because the input driving it has not been removed.

Your sex hormones. This is where it gets specific. Zearalenone, a particular mycotoxin, mimics estrogen closely enough that your body responds to it as though it were the real thing. That can create estrogen dominance from the outside in, regardless of what your ovaries are actually doing, with progesterone often the hormone that suffers most. So you can do everything right with progesterone support and still feel the symptoms of an estrogen-heavy picture, because the pressure is coming from a source your protocol was never aimed at. Your insulin and metabolism. Other mycotoxins, ochratoxin A again and aflatoxin B1, can disrupt insulin signaling, the system that manages your blood sugar and how your body stores and burns fuel. The lived version of that is stubborn belly fat, carbohydrate cravings, and energy crashes that hold on even when your diet and exercise are genuinely dialed in. When clean eating is not being rewarded the way it should be, it is worth asking whether something upstream is interfering with the signaling rather than assuming you simply need to try harder.

This is a sequencing problem, not another protocol

When a protocol is not working, the instinct is to reach for a different or stronger protocol. But often it is not a dosing or delivery problem at all. If an environmental load is sitting underneath your hormones, it generally has to be addressed before the hormone work can fully land.
